Hi, I linked here from your old blog after finding it via a search for photographer's rights in Singapore.

I'd just like to ask you a question viz that issue. If you don't mind discussing it would you please email me?

Thank you,

i could try, but i don't think you'd want me to. i'm quite a freestyler when it comes to altering my own clothes - raw seams, visible/uneven stitches etc.

and anyway, why are you buying clothes that need altering? i thought you got them tailored/as close to tailored as possible?

i think he's attained a certain notoriety which the government probably didn't expect would lead to such popularity.

and, nowadays, the problem is that if anything is banned, it's immediately talked about and known about because everyone has the internet and you can get ANYTHING on the internet if you know where to find it. whereas in the past, if they banned a film or a book you'd actually have to be looking for it in the first place before realising that it's unavailable.

also, human nature is such that we're always looking to attain what is just out of reach. which is why prohibition laws are rarely successful except in circumstances when the sovereign territory and/or the population is of such a size that is easily controlled and/or manipulated.

p/s: it's not purple basil, it's purple tiger chilli. very prolific, and very ornamental.

The irony is that if it hadn't been banned, I probably wouldn't have heard of Martyn See's films. Now kena ban, die die must watch!

Lovely photos btw. Especially like the recycled pots for the rocket plus purple basil (??) on the bottom right hand corner.

i don't think the first year of university is very useful at all. it's like a year-long induction session, to try and get you used to the concept of university.

and anyway, all the stuff you learn in your first year... you'll forget them by the time you graduate. so, pointless, really. but necessary.

even the malay birth rate dropped... in singapore the men don't want to marry because of the financial implication upon divorce due to the woman's charter. the woman don't want to get married because they would have given up rights to their body... (hey, that's the price of 50% of all the husband's assets in perpetuity post divorce...fair trade?)

dear suzi,

i don't think you actually get what i'm trying to say. the whole point of this post was a recognition that i can be a horrible person, and that i do it to people who are probably very undeserving of that treatment.

but anyway, because unless you've known me for a long time, you would say that i'm proud and pompous and have no heart for the common man. and, really, i don't mind because you're entitled to your opinions as i am to mine, based on whatever limited knowledge and resources we have at hand.

best wishes to you too

What you knew as a child...

**I have memories that probably can never be made again by any other child. I remember the otah-woman that used to sit by the edge of the concrete badminton court and chat with whoever came up, and sold otah for 20cents a piece.**

... you see! You DO know! Why do you remember her as an adult? So *unimportant* yet she touched your life in an unforgettable way. In this way she carries a message for your heart :)

I'll stop leaving comments all over your blog now but this random, passing, cheeky stranger wishes you a good day and a happy life.

I'm sorry to chastise, but pride and pomposity are low habits. I may have a high IQ but on the basis of what I've just read, I'd rather talk with that cashier than you! he sounds like a friendly soul, whereas you just stuck your nose up at him.

Worse you now say *what right do I have to judge him [indeed]...yet you qualify that by saying *maybe he's a med student*!! Do you not see the irony? Is he not worthwhile if he's *just* a cashier then? The value of kindness and humanity is worth more than an IQ of 1000 with a cold heart.

There is great beauty in the common people. Please stop to notice it and value everyone for what they are, regardless of *how useful they are to you* or *how worthy you consider their role in life to be*.

If you can see the spark of humanity that unites us all, it will bring such gladness to your heart. I hope it happens for you.

best wishes

hey, nobody's perfect. our brains were wired by evolution to be this way. categorising people and things, whether justified or not, is just one way our brains process things to be more efficient.

The most important thing is that you're aware of it. That makes you much better than the average person.

jiejie. i miss you. :(
and yes. i hate the gahmen. keep raising gst. as if i print money at home. and as my friend said, its a regressive tax, so it is so not helping the poor. hello. the gahmen needs to study econs again, they are obviously failing to see simple concepts.
when are u coming home!
and yeah, i just read about the pathetic changes they made to the law. like its of any use. where's the dignity and basic rights that women should be having. what stupid lack of insight do they have! omg. whats up with such victorian laws. even england ABOLISHED the law 16 years ago. ABOLISHED. but no. singapore jus decided to adjust, change, tweak the law. sigh.

I'd be surprised too if they try to rely on Australian cases. From what I know, that doesn't seem to happen at all unless its to do with trade marks or copyright law.

ok, sort of breezed through that case, and it's consistent and logical because the tort of defamation (in australia, and perhaps singapore too) occurs where the harm to reputation is found... right?

D&amp;N will probably try and use it somehow, but did you read how they dismissed all of FEER's references to cases as being irrelevant or not applicable? i'd be surprised if they were to rely heavily on an australian case to further their cause.

Interestingly, the law of defamation (that probably includes libel) in Australia is such that defamation occurs not where the offending material is published, but in the jurisdiction where the reputation of the plaintiff exists. <a href="http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/high_ct/2002/56.html" rel="nofollow">According to the HCA</a>, since harm to the plaintiff's reputation occurs at the point in which the offending expression is read/heard/perceived by people, it must follow that the liability is incurred within that jurisdiction.

Of course when I first heard of this judgment I was overcome with disbelief, as I thought that the consequences of forum shopping or multiple lawsuits worldwide against internet publishers would have a chilling effect on speech.

When I read the judgment however I realised that the ruling was logically consistent, and very well argued. And it turns out that the chilling effect didn't really come about.

I think it is very likely that D&amp;N would be trying to make arguments similar to those cited by the HCA, maybe even try to bring the Australian statement of the law into HK.

it wasn't the coup itself that i was thinking about, really. it was the reasons behind the coup, i.e. thaksin's unsavoury behaviour, that ought to be the ringers of alarm bells.

Sigh.

As long as there is this confucian values nonsense, where you're never allowed to talk back or give your own view, or where your ideas are always seen as a challenge to your elders/parents/establishment/Men in White, then nothing will be gained!

But, and this might just be wishful thinking, if even just a quarter of females in singapore stopped constantly thinking about how to make their skin fairer whiter and brighter, and how effective X-brand of slimming pills is compared to another, and maybe spent that money on the Economist or the Financial Times (or even National Geographic), then maybe some change might happen.

If it carries on as it is, then there is truly no more hope for the singaporean womankind.

Yes, more and more I think we need a real women's movement in Singapore. Just because Singaporean women are less discriminated against and condescended to than elsewhere in Asia does not mean we stop there and accept everything the Men in White hand down to us!!

Oooh plant pictures! We're planning to move (shakes fist at stupid white man) so I'll ask you for the seeds then, hopefully around May or June. Think I'll start with the pre-potted rosemary, thyme and basil (maybe 2 pots of basil so I can make lots and lots of pesto), and see how I go with <strike>killing</strike> nurturing them.

devoid: i grew most of the herbs (2 types of parsley, sage and basil) from seed last year, and when i moved, just dug them out of the ground, popped them into pots and brought them with me.

the rosemary i got from my boyfriend's mom in january/february, and she just gave me a pot of mint. the rest (thyme, borage) i'm hoping will grow really quickly because they're still so small!

i'm also waiting for more seeds to arrive in the post - i'm obsessed. i buy waaaay too much for one person. if you like i can send you some in the post.

Did you buy the herbs that are already planted in little pots at the supermarket, or did you grow them from scratch? I think mine will probably die very quickly because the radiator is below the window sill.

yes! staying with parents just destroys the whole houseparty vibe... although neighbours can be a pain as well.

i'm moving out of this huge house (7 bedrooms!) and moving to a tiny flat, so no more houseparties for me.

i'll have to make do with grown-up dinner parties where we all sit around and drink wine and go 'oh this is wonderful dah-ling, thank you very much for this meal'. *rolls eyes* thank god we have a balcony and a bbq pit.

"Soy milk" but "soya bean milk" for the literal translation from the Mandarin, I think? I also make the mental distinction because soy milk in the tetrapaks tastes nothing like the real stuff from the hawker centre!

Being the Mac geek that I am, checks on the lovely widget dictionary have revealed that the actual term is 'soy'. 'Soya' is simply the British version of it. It's your call.
